ROANOKE, VA (May 21, 2015) – The Judicial Council of Virginia has named Gentry Locke’s Senior Counsel, Justice Cynthia D. Kinser, as the recipient of the 2014 Harry L. Carrico Outstanding Career Service Award.

The Harry L. Carrico Outstanding Career Service Award is presented annually by the Judicial Council of Virginia to a Virginia judge who, over an extended career, has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the administration of the courts while exhibiting the traits of integrity, courtesy, impartiality, wisdom and humility. All appellate, circuit and district court judges are eligible for nomination.

“Justice Kinser is recognized not only for her legal and leadership abilities, but also for her commitment to public service,” states Managing Partner Monica Monday. “This award recognizes Justice Kinser’s years of selfless service to the Commonwealth, as well as her commitment to access to justice and the rule of law. As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Kinser lead the judiciary during challenging times as budgetary constraints threatened the effective operations of the judiciary. Her leadership paved the way for increased funding for Virginia’s judiciary, thereby preserving access to the courts of the Commonwealth and promoting the efficient operations of our legal system..”

Kinser is the recipient of several other notable awards, among them the Virginia Bar Association’s Gerald L. Baliles Distinguished Service Award in 2015, and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Law in 2011.

As Virginia’s first woman chief justice, Kinser spent 17 years on the Supreme Court of Virginia, with more than three of those years as Chief Justice. She joined Gentry Locke in May of 2015. Prior to her service on the Supreme Court of Virginia, she worked in private practice in southwest Virginia, served a term as the Commonwealth’s Attorney of Lee County, served as Bankruptcy Trustee, and was a Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Virginia.
