Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore has a long-standing commitment to pro bono service. The Firm's pro bono policy is to provide free or reduced fee representation or counseling for an individual, group or class of individuals, government agency, tax-exempt organization or interest group which could not otherwise retain us at our normal rates with respect to (1) an important social or legal issue; (2) an injustice; or (3) advice or representation about legal options, duties, or rights.
The goal of our pro bono program is to facilitate, stimulate and give recognition to appropriate pro bono activities, while ensuring that our efforts are expended wisely in accordance with our commitments to the community.
The Firm provides assistance with wills, power of attorney and advanced medical directives, and domestic relations matters. These mainly come as referrals from Blue Ridge Legal Services and through the Wills for Heroes program. Previously, Gentry Locke attorneys have provided the highest number of pro bono hours of service of any Roanoke law firm for referrals from Blue Ridge for domestic relations matters. A recent internal survey revealed that 100% of our Associates and 80% of our Partners donate their time to pro bono representation, and in 2012 we provided over 300 hours of pro bono services to the community.
Once we undertake a pro bono representation, our commitment to the client is the same as for any paying client: to provide the most sophisticated legal services in the most efficient way with the best possible service. Consistent with this, it is the Firm's policy to give pro bono services exactly the same recognition as services to paying clients.
Pro bono cases come to our Firm through area agencies and by involvement in state and local bar association initiatives. The following resources may be of help to those seeking such representation:
