Where can we find you when you're not in the office?
Somewhere outside. I am an avid runner and frequently participate in road and trail races. I also love skiing, hiking and mountain biking and take full advantage of the trails nearby. Living and working in Roanoke allows for quick access to all kinds of outdoor adventures. When I have more time, I'm usually out exploring new places way beyond southwest Virginia.
It sounds like your outdoors experience isn't limited to the Blue Ridge - tell us about your adventures outside of Virginia.
I love mountains and travel, and my wanderlust has taken me to some really amazing places. As a skier and runner, I enjoy visiting mountains from Maine to North Carolina and from the Rockies to the Alps. My sister recently moved to Telluride, Colorado which is an especially unique mountain town. Telluride is a former mining boom-town located in an isolated box canyon that was founded in the mid 1800s, so I enjoy the town’s culture, architecture, and history in addition to incredible skiing, trails, and scenery. Internationally, I've had some remarkable once in a lifetime opportunities.
What are some of your most memorable travel experiences?
I've been visiting Bavaria to see relatives since I was young, so I have many happy memories from there. My godfather, who was in the German Mountain Corps, was a huge influence on me and helped cultivate my love of the outdoors. Additionally, my father and I have canoed across the Quetico Boundary Waters in Canada and once hiked the Inca trail to Machu Picchu together in Peru. I've also spent time in a few African countries, including Lesotho, a landlocked, mountainous country completely surrounded by South Africa. My girlfriend lived in Tanzania for a year, as well. We once went swimming with whale sharks near Zanzibar - that was definitely an unforgettable experience.
Why Gentry Locke?
While I have been fortunate to have traveled across the U.S. and world, the Blue Ridge region will always call me home. My family and friends are here. I grew up in Lynchburg, went to school in Charlottesville and Lexington, and now I'm working in Roanoke, and it feels great to work with people and businesses in an area I care so much about.
