“This recognition is the capstone of a remarkable legal career,” said Gentry Locke Managing Partner Monica Taylor Monday. “Roberts exemplifies the best of what it means to be a Virginia lawyer, adhering to the highest levels of professionalism, ethics, and courtesy. A skilled litigator who tried more than 200 jury trials, Roberts has played a tremendous personal role in the development of Virginia’s law, particularly in the field of medical negligence. He has also been a mentor to countless young lawyers, and has devoted hundreds if not thousands of hours to the professional development of lawyers in our firm. Our legal system has benefited immeasurably from his contributions.”

Membership in the Hall of Fame is reserved for Virginia lawyers who are 60 years of age and older. Inclusion is determined by career accomplishments, contributions to the development of the law in Virginia, to the bar, to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and efforts to improve the quality of justice in Virginia.

“It’s always seemed a credit to me when someone asked me to be his or her lawyer,” Roberts said. “It demands that I be available, that I look out for the interest of the client, that I do everything I can to perform my job perfectly, and that I conduct myself with honor. Inside the firm, I have tried to set an example of hard work and respect. I believe that we’ve earned a reputation as a firm with truly great lawyers, and I am very proud of that.”

After more than 50 years of practice with Gentry Locke, Roberts has retired from the active practice of law, but remains closely associated with the firm. He regularly consults with other members of the firm, plays an important role in mentoring young lawyers, and continues to be a role model for all firm attorneys. Roberts has participated in more than 200 trials. He received the Roanoke Bar Association’s Bo Rogers Lifetime Achievement Award, is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, and has been consistently recognized as one of the leading trial lawyers in the Commonwealth of Virginia by Benchmark LitigationBest Lawyers in America, and Virginia Super Lawyers.
