Roanoke is a community that values and supports a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. It is a Blue Ridge Mountain city with a wide variety of people and institutions working together collaboratively to foster opportunity in a multitude of fields.
Roanoke Innovates is a partnership highlighting this collaborative effort, bringing together the academics, entrepreneurs, researchers, investors and developers that power the Roanoke Innovation Corridor.
“Virginia Tech is doing amazing things, VTC, the Fralin Biomedical Institute, there’s so much incredible work going on and this is a way to sort of harness all of that and show to the larger world, not just to the community, but to the larger world, this is what we’re about and this is what we’re doing,” Marc Nelson, Roanoke’s special projects coordinator for innovation and economic inclusion, told WSLS.
Anchored by the Virginia-Tech Carilion Research Institute, School of Medicine and Carilion Clinic, the Roanoke Innovation Corridor also includes Virginia Western Community College, the forthcoming merger of Jefferson College and Radford University, and a number of burgeoning businesses and developments in the Roanoke region.
Carilion Clinic just announced a $300 million hospital expansion, and the research institute continues to grow, attracting incredible brain power and talent. Several business incubators focused on helping entrepreneurs have opened in Blacksburg and Roanoke, including the Regional Acceleration and Mentoring Program (RAMP) in Roanoke — a joint venture of the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council, Roanoke and Virginia Western and its educational foundation.
Gentry Locke is headquartered in the very heart of this Innovation Corridor, and we support innovators and entrepreneurs in a number of ways.

“This recognition is the capstone of a remarkable legal career,” said Gentry Locke Managing Partner Monica Taylor Monday. “Roberts exemplifies the best of what it means to be a Virginia lawyer, adhering to the highest levels of professionalism, ethics, and courtesy. A skilled litigator who tried more than 200 jury trials, Roberts has played a tremendous personal role in the development of Virginia’s law, particularly in the field of medical negligence. He has also been a mentor to countless young lawyers, and has devoted hundreds if not thousands of hours to the professional development of lawyers in our firm. Our legal system has benefited immeasurably from his contributions.”
Membership in the Hall of Fame is reserved for Virginia lawyers who are 60 years of age and older. Inclusion is determined by career accomplishments, contributions to the development of the law in Virginia, to the bar, to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and efforts to improve the quality of justice in Virginia.
“It’s always seemed a credit to me when someone asked me to be his or her lawyer,” Roberts said. “It demands that I be available, that I look out for the interest of the client, that I do everything I can to perform my job perfectly, and that I conduct myself with honor. Inside the firm, I have tried to set an example of hard work and respect. I believe that we’ve earned a reputation as a firm with truly great lawyers, and I am very proud of that.”
After more than 50 years of practice with Gentry Locke, Roberts has retired from the active practice of law, but remains closely associated with the firm. He regularly consults with other members of the firm, plays an important role in mentoring young lawyers, and continues to be a role model for all firm attorneys. Roberts has participated in more than 200 trials. He received the Roanoke Bar Association’s Bo Rogers Lifetime Achievement Award, is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, and has been consistently recognized as one of the leading trial lawyers in the Commonwealth of Virginia by Benchmark Litigation, Best Lawyers in America, and Virginia Super Lawyers.
